The first route is a barren and rocky landscape, with few trees. Small rivers thread over the stone to join up with a large lake, near the first town, Tiacia.
Situated outside of Tiacia, the lake is home to a booming holiday resort. Find several water pokémon here, as well as pokémon contests and Pokémarts. The first Gym is situated here.
Here the rocky ground gives way to grass. These routes are very long, winding paths. The landscape is a savannah, with golden grass and few trees. Closer to route 003 the trees thicken, before coming to an abrupt halt as a huge river carves through the land. It is shallow, though, and corssing is easy.
Route 004 is dense woodland. The path wanders and sometimes is lost altogether. In the very centre of the forest lies Inaunia. It is a very small town, with a Pokémon Centre and little else.
Forest for miles around, where to go? This forest covers half the island of Arolia, and there is no quick way out. A short way outside Inaunia there is a cavern, which is the beginning of the underground routes, 005, 006 and 007. The caves are linked by tiny tunnels with low roofs. They are surprisingly dry, with a small amount of water dripping from the ceiling. The caves are home to natural wonders- stalagmites and stalagtites. Make sure you have beaten Renée, the first gym leader, so that you can use the HM Flash.
In the last, and biggest cavern you will find a city, made of pure marble. It is the city of Osania, the exit of the tunnels. It is well stocked, with Pokémon Centres, Pokémarts and a Gym.
You emerge from the tunnels at last! But onto what? It is a flat plain, dotted with the twisted husks of dead trees. Every so often flames spurt out of a hole in the ground, adding to the heavy stench of brimstone and sulphur. You have reached the Fiery Plains.
Radonia, the town embedded in hardened magma. It has a gym and a Pokemon Centre, but little else. The whole town is built into the side of the huge Mt. Unda, the volcanic mountain. It is active, often erupting. However, since the town is so well protected by the Fire Corps, it rarely suffers damage.
The journey is almost at an end- beyond the volcano is route 010, known as the Hard Road. It is the toughest landscape of all, a vast, jagged landscape of rock with no water. The route is extremely long, populated by high level pokémon and without a Pokémon Centre in sight. If you survive, you're deemed fit to face the Elite Four.
